GOVERNMENT OF IMO STATE
PRESS RELEASE
SUBJECT: TRADITIONAL RULERS, LABOUR &
RELIGIOUS LEADERS, OTHERS HAIL ADDITIONAL OPERATIONAL LICENSES FOR THREE MORE NEWLY
ESTABLISHED UNIVERSITIES IN THE STATE
-AND HIGHLY COMMEND GOVERNOR ROCHAS OKOROCHA FOR THE FEAT.
With the total
of four Operational Licenses got from the National Universities’ Commission
(NUC) by Governor Rochas Okorocha for four, out of the newly established Six
Universities by his Administration, well meaning Imo people including front row
traditional rulers, labour and religious leaders and others, in the State have hailed
the development and also Commended the governor, describing the whole thing as
an outstanding feat.
Governor
Okorocha had earlier got the Operational License for the University of
Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Aboh/Ngor/Umuagwo, and on Tuesday, May
7, 2019 he also got additional licenses for another three newly established Universities
by his Rescue Mission Administration in the State, and the exercise to that effect
was Conducted by the Executive Secretary of NUC Prof. Abubakar Rasheed at the
Headquarters of the Commission.
The three newly
established Universities for which Operational Licenses were got last Tuesday
are, University of Creative Technology, Isiaku/Nkwerre Imo State, University of
Science and Technology, Umuna Imo State, and University of Medical Sciences
Ogboko Imo State making the total four out of the six built by Governor
Okorocha.
Commenting on the
development and on the effort of the governor, the Chairman, State Council of
Traditional Rulers, HRM Eze Samuel .A. Ohiri said that every Imo man or woman
who loves the progress of the State must join in the Celebration of this rare
feat especially when it is remembered that education is the biggest industry in
the State and the governor, Owelle Okorocha has not left any stone unturned in
that regard.
His words “We
are all happy about these new Universities and their Operational Licenses. Imo
State has continued to lead in JAMB Applications for the past seven years. And
students who are indigenes of the State qualified for admissions every year do
not have them because of the limited chances in the existing Universities plus
other considerations like states of Origin and so on. But with these new Universities
that problem has been solved at least to a very reasonable extent,
“I commend the
governor. Don’t forget that we have always called him Commander of free
education and he has shown that he is really a Commander in the area of
education. These new Institutions will really help in all aspects. The
traditional Institution in the State commends him, to the glory of God and for
the good of the State.” he stated
The State
Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Austin Chilakpu
described the development as a healthy one and explained that the governor,
Owelle Okorocha has actually shown that he is a lover of education. He said
there is no Imo person who won’t be happy with the new Universities and their
Operational Licenses that have been got.
An Ancient
Traditional Ruler, HRM Eze Thomas Obiefule of Umudioka Ancient Kingdom said “we
are happy with the governor’s efforts in building these new Universities and
working very hard to get their Operational Licenses even before leaving office.
It shows how concerned he is about the good of the State and her people. I urge
Imo people to continue to Support Owelle Rochas Okorocha both in and out of
Office because he has the interest of Imo State at heart”.
Bishop Udo
Azuogu who is the General Overseer of Our Sanctuary Gospel Church Nigeria and
the State Chairman of the Oil and Solid Mineral Producing Area Landlords
Association of Nigeria (OMPALAN), remarked “we all know Owelle’s love for the
State and its people. What all those before him could not do he has done all of
them. Very soon it will dawn on Imo people that his is their Messiah. He has
done enough for the State. The biggest industry in Imo is education, and he has
done very well in that area and in governance generally. He is also a good democrat.
In doing all these and with all the Criticisms he has never disturbed anybody.”
At the
inception of his administration in 2011, Governor Okorocha introduced free
education at all levels, built one Storey School building in each of the 305
wards in the State, renovated all the Premier Colleges in the State, employed
thousands of teachers, built new Schools, built six new Universities, four
Polytechnics and two Colleges of Education, and everything needed to be done
for their take-off has been done. The new Institutions will be PPP driven.
All these
developments had given room for the steady increase in the School population in
the State from 287,000 in 2011 to more than One million in 2019. And also made
the State to continue to come first in JAMB Applications for seven years now with
an average of 130,000 Applications, whereas only one or two percent of these
applicants got admissions every year, out of the whole lot. The new
Universities will help to a very large extent.
